This month is Baby Safety Month and a company called Owlet has sponsored an entire month of posts on baby safety. Yesterday it was my friend Rachael from Busy Mommy Media. She had a nasty drowning scare with her toddler, so she wrote about baby safety around the water. If you have little ones, you should really check it out – it was very scary.
I’m a grandparent now, so I wanted to write about the challenges of keeping babies safe when they are just visiting your home. It’s so fun to have your grandkids around, or even to tend a neighbor’s child, but it’s also a huge responsibility. You really need to have a plan in place for how you are going to set up temporary gates on the stairs, cover the outlets, make sure small items are up out of reach, etc. When it comes to a child you love, you really need to be on your game while they are visiting.
Disclaimer: This is a sponsored post, but I check out my sponsors very carefully. I only present items that I feel are of good quality and are a good fit for my readers.
When I first saw the Owlet Smart Sock baby monitoring system, I literally gasped. Back in the ’80’s and ’90’s when I was raising my babies, items like this simply didn’t exist. Not a lot was known about SIDS back then, and it was horrifying when seemingly healthy babies just died for no apparent reason. My own sister was almost a victim. She stopped breathing one day, but fortunately, my mother was holding her at the time and she startled her back into breathing. Even 40 years later, my Mom still remembered being so terrified!
The Owlet Smart Sock is a simple pulse oximetry system that is integrated into a tiny baby sock. You just slip it on your baby anytime he or she is sleeping and it uses a harmless light to view the baby’s oxygenation and heartbeat. We’ve all used the same technology in the hospital when they clip that red light thing onto your finger. Then it transmits the information constantly to a base station as well as your SmartPhone to alert you if the baby is in any distress. I think it is simply BRILLIANT! How many needless tragedies could have been avoided if they’d had this 20 years ago?
